Comma Butterfly (Polygonia c-album)
This butterfly with its ragged edged wings can be seen on the reserve in flowery meadows and around woodland margins, following hibernation in April and again in mid summer in June and July and possibly later in the year in September as two broods occur. The upperwing surface is orange in colour with various brown markings. The underside is a plainer brown with a distinctive white 'comma'-shaped mark on the hindwing, which gives this species its name. The caterpillars feed on a variety of plants including nettles, willow and other trees.
