Butterflies

Meadow Brown (Maniola jurtina)

Male Meadow Brown The Meadow Brown is the largest common brown butterfly to be seen on the reserve. It is duller in colour than the smaller but equally as common Hedge Brown or Gatekeeper. The female can be separated from the male by the larger single eye spot on the upperwing. The flight period is quite long, from the beginning of June to the end of July or early August with the females occurring towards the latter half of this period. The adult butterflies frequent meadows and other grassy places where the larvae feed on the grasses.
