White Letter Hairstreak (Strymonidia w-album)

White-letter Hairstreak

There has been a single record of this species on the reserve, found between Meadow Lane railway crossing and the Delta area, close to elm trees, a favourite food plant of its larvae. Wooded areas such as this are the preferred habitat of this butterfly, which flies mainly in July. This is a small dark brown butterfly with an orange sub-marginal band on the underside of the hindwing and a distictive white 'W'-shaped line. There are also two prominent tail-like protrusions on the hindwing.
