Butterflies

Small White (Pieris rapae)

Small White

This species is distinctly smaller than the Large White, although similar in colouration, with two black spots on both upper and underside of the forewing which also has a blackish-grey tip. The larvae feed on similar species of plant to the Large White and the adult butterflies frequent the same types of habitat. On the reserve the first brood are normally seen flying in late May to early June whilst the second brood are in flight from late June through to early September.
