This species has gradually moved northwards over recent years due to warmer climatic conditions and at least one individual has been recorded on the reserve. They prefer the same type of habitat to the commoner skippers and are extremely similar in appearance to the Small Skipper. However, the underside of the antennal tip is black in the Essex Skipper, distinguishing it from the Small Skipper where the antennae are all orange/buff coloured. Hatching from a single brood their flight period extends from May through to August.
