Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni)

Brimstone (Male) This species produces a single brood which begin their flight period during the month of June. However, individuals that have hibernated over winter may be seen in early spring. Both male and female have a pointed tip to the wings. The male is a bright lemon yellow, whilst the female is a pale greenish white in appearance. Both have reddish-pink head and antennae. The larval food plant is mainly buckthorn and the adults are most likely to be seen frequenting open patches of ground or lightly wooded areas such as Beeston Marsh or the works end of the Bund.
