Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui)

Painted Lady This large brightly coloured butterfly appears in June when migrants arrive from the continent. Migration is fairly sporadic and numbers vary dramatically from year to year. Further individuals may occur in late summer from a single new generation. Both upper wings and the underside of the forewing are a pale pinkish-brown with patches of white and darker brown, especially towards the tip of the upper forewing. The underside of the hindwing has a pearlescent appearence with five eye-like spots towards its margin. The adults feed in similar areas to the Red Admiral and the larvae will feed on nettles or thistles.
